The buyers who publish
Who buys case files for AI, and what each says it needs
Mercor's listing asks law firms for closed matters by name. Other organisations we read take legal documents among company records in general.
The listing written for law firms
Mercor's Law Firm listing, published on 17 October 2026 and read by us on 29 October 2026, asks to license complete files from closed matters and completed deals: pleadings and discovery productions from concluded litigation, data rooms and contracts from transactions. It says single matters with hundreds or thousands of documents are the most valuable, that everything is anonymized and active matters are excluded, and it names Relativity, Everlaw, iManage, NetDocuments and Clio among the tools.
Its requirements include client consent, or documents that can be fully anonymized, and privileged material clients will not release is not a fit. Those are what one buyer asks; the conduct rules on our provisions board, on revealing information relating to a representation and on privilege, still apply to the firm.
